The National Health Care Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland) is the Local Host Organisation for the Health Technology Assessment international (HTAi) Annual Meeting 2022. This is the largest and most prestigious international conference solely focusing on HTA. HTA is the process whereby the medical, economical and ethical value of health technologies is determined. The outcomes of HTA are used to improve quality, accessibility and affordability of healthcare.

The conference will bring together over 1000 researchers, policymakers, health professionals, research- and development professionals, patients and patient representatives. The conference aims to promote the development, understanding and use of HTA around the world as a means of fostering innovation and effective use of resources in health care.

Main theme

The main theme of the conference will be: 'Lifecycle approach: coming together to make it happen'. Calls for a lifecycle approach to determine the value of medicines, devices and other health services have grown in recent years in response to the challenges of innovative and novel technologies, disconnected and disparate stakeholders and data requirements, public expectation and achieving patient-centric health systems. A lifecycle approach conveys the idea that HTA needs to explore the value of health technologies from an early stage of development throughout their maturation. As such, a lifecycle approach defies the notion that HTA could be a one-off undertaking.

For whom?

The conference is open to all. However, the conference is primarily focused on bringing together researchers from universities and other knowledge institutes, research- and development professionals, healthcare professionals and their representatives, policymakers, patients and patient representatives.

Subthemes

In addition to the main theme, there are 3 subthemes which the conference will explore, namely:

  1. Adopting a Lifecycle Approach in HTA: Consequences for Priority-Setting and International Collaboration.
  2. Public Confidence in Healthcare Decision-making.
  3. Running Around in Circles: Time for Real Collaboration between Regulators, HTA Bodies and Clinicians.
