Current state of affairs: advisory report sent to the Minister
The National Health Care Institute has sent this advisory report to the Minister of VWS. The Minister makes the final decision whether or not to reimburse the medicinal product from the basic health care package.
Abaloparatide is intended for certain people with osteoporosis
Abaloparatide is the active substance. The brand name is Eladynos®. The medicine is given as an injection under the skin every day.
The medicine can be used for people with osteoporosis. Over a million Dutch people have osteoporosis. In osteoporosis, the body breaks down more bone than it makes. This causes the formation of large cavities of air in the bones. You don't feel osteoporosis. It doesn't hurt, but your bones get increasingly weaker. This can cause them to break easier. This causes symptoms such as pain and problems with movement.
The marketing authorisation holder has requested reimbursement for the treatment of severe osteoporosis in postmenopausal women at very high risk of fractures. Postmenopausal means after menopause. This medicine is therefore intended for women after menopause who have osteoporosis and are at high risk of fracture.
