The National Health Care Institute has advised the Minister of Health, Welfare and Sport (VWS) not to reimburse the RSVPreF3 vaccine (Arexvy®) from the basic healthcare package. This vaccine can be used to prevent lower respiratory tract disease caused by respiratory syncytial virus (RS virus). The vaccine has not been shown to have additional value for patients.
Current state of affairs: advisory report sent to the Minister
The National Health Care Institute has sent this advice to the Minister of VWS. The Minister makes the final decision whether or not to reimburse the medicinal product from the basic healthcare package.
RSVPreF3 vaccine is intended for certain patients at increased risk of RS virus disease
RSVPreF3 is the active substance. The brand name is Arexvy®. The vaccine is an injection.
This vaccine can be used in adults aged 60 years and older who are at an increased risk of becoming seriously ill if infected with the RS virus. This increases the risk of patients being hospitalised. These are adult patients aged 60 years and older with at least 1 of the following diseases:
- respiratory tract disorder COPD;
- asthma;
- a chronic respiratory disease or lung disease;
- type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus;
- chronic heart failure; or
- advanced liver disease or kidney disease.

The National Health Care Institute advises the Minister of VWS not to reimburse RSVPreF3 vaccine (Arexvy®) from the basic healthcare package. The vaccine has not been shown to have any added value in the specified patient group.

Explanation about the reimbursement of medicinal products
RSVPreF3 is an extramural medicinal product. Extramural means: medicines for home use that can be obtained at the pharmacy with the prescription from a physician. They are only reimbursed from the basic healthcare package if they are listed in the GVS.
